Tarot cards have been used by psychics
and spiritualists for many centuries as a means of revealing
answers to life issues; of divining future events; and to
provide advice for effective management of relationships,
finances and careers.
Tarot cards are provided in decks of 78 cards,
with each deck featuring a unique artistic design and visual
style. The archetypal Rider-Waite deck is most common, however
many more experienced Tarot readers prefer more idiosyncratic
and less well-known decks.
Every Tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided
into the Major Arcana (22 pictorial symbol or "trump"
cards) and Minor Arcana (4 suits of 14 cards each: Wands,
Cups, Swords, and Pentacles).
Whilst there are similarities with modern playing
cards (Hearts, Diamonds, Spades and Clubs), each Tarot card
features unique and highly symbolic imagery with a variety
of complex meanings depending on the spread (dealing pattern)
and orientation (ie. whether each card is upright or upside-down).
The meaning of each card drawn depends not
only on its position and orientation, but also on the relative
position of the other cards and their inter-relationships.
The various spreads commonly used include three-cards (past,
present, future) for brief readings and the traditional, highly
popular Celtic Cross (10 cards) for more in-depth analysis.
